Rock House

There are countless old houses scattered through the desert like this one, just south of Bell Mountain in Apple Valley. They are now something of an attractive nuisance, a place to drink beer and shoot guns. I always find it fascinating to think how they got there in the first place. Who built them? Why? I didn't see any obvious mines or other prospects in the area and certainly no signs of water for miles. Whatever their original purpose was they suit me just fine as excellent photography subjects today.

Deep Creek Hot Springs

The deep creek hot springs is easily the most amazing place in the High Desert. Hot spring enthusiasts from around the world visit here and it can get a little crowded.  I've talked to several people who have visited hot springs from Colorado to New Mexico and Oregon and all have said this is the best. Fortunately it is only accessed by dirt roads and a minimum of an 1.5 mile hike that is at times dangerously steep, which helps keep out a lot of traffic. It's not a good family destination as encountering naked people smoking marijuana is guaranteed. The springs stay warm year round although the river crossing can be cold and treacherous during the winter months. Overnight camping is not allowed. Do not bring glass and pack out anything you bring in. There is an amoeba that lives in the hot water that can kill you if it gets to your brain. However, this can only occur if water is forced up your nose when you jump in the water. If you need directions or an enthusiastic hiking partner don't be afraid to ask me. Have fun, be respectful and stay safe. These photos are at a resolution not fit to print. To purchase one for print, up to 30" X 20", email me.
